The biggest struggle that newcomers to boxing face is the ability to take a hit and not have it faze them. As humans, our first instinct is always to shield ourselves from harm and to look away from danger. This evolutionary trait must be overcome and mastered if one is to learn to box.
The first thing to learn is to always be looking at your opponent. Once you have mastered this the next step is being able to get hit and not look away. The moment you look away, it gives the opponent ample opportunity to find an opening.
